Sex has a lot more benefits than simply the feeling you get when it’s coming to an end. There are some real health benefits for men that may surprise you. It is said that sex eases pain, eliminates stress, and lowers blood pressure. But how does it all work? Check out these 7 health benefits of sex for men:
Feel the burn?
Ok, maybe that’s the wrong phrase to use when referring to sex, but sex burns calories! Men’s Health Magazine reports that the average men can burn off about 100 calories during sex. The calories vary depending on how long it lasts. According to Sexual Health Educator Dr. Debby Herbenick, “Some research on intercourse suggests that it lasts for about 7 to 16 minutes, on average.” Want to calculate how many calories you can burn in your next session? Relieve your stress with some hanky-panky
According to a report by the American Psychological Association, men were more likely to manage stress by being physically active than women were. Since sex can be categorized as exercise, it also works in the same way to help manage anxiety and depression. The downside is stress can reduce sex drive.
Let the blood rush to low places
The American Heart Association states that men suffer more from high blood pressure than women. According to a study reported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), those who have intercourse have a better and more positive response to things that cause high blood pressure compared to those who only masturbated or did not have intercourse. This means it’s fair to say that sex can promote lower blood pressure in men.
Get a good night of rest
Have you ever wonder why you get so sleepy after great sex? There is some science behind it. Oxytocin, aka the “love drug,” has a variety of benefits. Although women have much more of the hormone than men, when released during an orgasm it serves as a sleep aid for a man, which could have you “sleeping like a baby.”
Sex can lower your chance for prostate cancer
The American Cancer Society says prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American Men. A study conducted by Harvard Medical School finds that, “men who ejaculated 21 times or more a month enjoyed a 33 percent lower risk of prostate cancer compared with men who reported four to seven ejaculations a month throughout their lifetimes.” The study suggests ejaculating could help by ridding the prostate of harmful substances that could attribute to prostate cancer. More research is being done on why ejaculation may be helpful with this issue.
Pain, pain go away – come back on a sexless day
Sex can relieve pain. During sex, the body releases a variety of hormones, including the one mentioned earlier. Both oxytocin and endorphins are released through sex and can help men manage pain. Studies have found that these hormones can help relieve pain, but a more recent study submitted to the NIH found that oxytocin can help even bigger issues like chronic pain. I wonder how much sex you would need to have to get rid of a headache?
