At least 10 persons were reportedly killed with houses, petrol station and vehicles razed when gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attacked Igangan community in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State.
It was gathered that said the assailants invaded the community in the early hours of Sunday, June 6, with guns and other dangerous weapons and unleashed terror on residents.
An activist and the Secretary of Farmers Union in the town, Taiwo Adeagbo, said that no fewer than 10 lives were lost during the attack.
Adeagbo said five residents were shot dead by the attackers while security agents killed five of assailants.
He said a petrol station, cars and a truck loaded with cassava flour and some cars were set ablaze by the rampaging gunmen during the midnight attack.
According to him, the assailants invaded the town around 12 midnight on Sunday as they burnt many properties such as cars, a truck and a petrol filling station.
He disclosed that the exact number of people killed, injured and the number of properties destroyed remain unknown due to the fact that the incident happened at night.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, who confirmed the incident said a combined team of the police, hunters, and vigilantes were able to beat back the attackers.
Osifeso further stated that the situation is being closely monitored and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.
Reacting to the incident on Sunday, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde called for calm, adding that ?security operatives are now in control of the situation.
“I have received the shocking news of the attacks on residents of Igangan, Ibarapaland, in the early hours of this morning. I am currently being briefed on the incidents. I urge residents to remain calm as security operatives are now in control of the situation.”
