Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Akwa Ibom State Command have arrested two suspects for illegal dealing on Petroleum products suspected to be Automative Gas Oil (AGO) popularly known as diesel.
The adulterated diesel was found hidden underneath and in between packs of Youghurt drinks.
The suspects, Aliyu Mohammadu, 27 and Sani Mohammedu, 25, were paraded before newsmen at the NSCDC Exhibit Yard in Uyo on Wednesday, April 28.
While parading the truck and suspects, the State Commandant, Adekunle Fadeyi stated that the truck intercepted on Friday, April 23, was loaded in Ahoada in Rivers State, and had evaded several security check points.
“Luck however ran out on the criminals when vigilant NSCDC operatives stationed at the Calabar/Itu highway decided to conduct a routine inspection of the truck after flagging it” he stated.
He stated further that “during the routine check, my men discovered wet sack bags, containing AGOs stored in cellophene bags. The AGOs were clandestinely covered by hundreds of packs of youghurt drinks”
Fadeyi disclosed that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.
On the hundreds of cartons of youghurt drinks, the NSCDC boss disclosed that the drinks would be destroyed once the case is concluded, as the drinks have been contaminated by the adulterated Diesel.
While thanking the Commandant General of the Corps, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi mni, for giving them the leeway in discharging their mandates, he said NSCDC will not rest on its oars in riding Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large of every form of pipeline vandalism, illegal bunkering and other criminal activities.
The Commandant went ahead to solicit for support from the general public, noting that the security challenges bedeviling the nation could only be addressed substantially through intelligence gathering and collaborative effort between security agencies and the populace.
