[News] Delta Police PPRO reacts to ongoing protest against alleged police brutality, says occupants of unregistered car attacked cops while resisting arrest

The spokesperson of the Delta Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, has reacted to the ongoing protest by youths against alleged police brutality and extortion in Ughelli.

Explaining the reasons behind the ongoing protest, the PPRO, in a statement posted on his X account said policemen from the Ughelli Area Command had on February 13, 2024, intercepted an unregistered Benz GLK without a plate number in the Ekuigbo community.

The occupants of the vehicle, four boys, could not establish ownership of the car.

In an attempt to arrest the boys, some youths attacked the policemen, destroyed their vehicle, and broke the head of one of the officers.

Edafe said nine of the suspects were arrested over the unprovoked attack.

He warned youths to desist from the protest, adding that no amount of their protest would deter the police from doing its job.

“Regarding the ongoing protest in Ughelli, the Command wishes to inform members of the public that yesterday 13th February 2024, policemen from Ughelli Area Command intercepted an unregistered Benz GLK without a plate number in Ekuigbo community. The men confronted the four boys who could not establish ownership of the car,” the statement read.

“In an attempt to arrest them, some of the youths attacked the police, destroyed their vehicle, and broke the head of one of the officers. Nine of the suspects were arrested and will be charged in court. Youths are advised to stay off any protest because it won’t deter us from doing our job,” he added.
