[News] Ex-Barcelona star, Luis Suarez could retire from football as he’s in ‘constant pain’ and taking ‘daily injections’ to help battle injury problems

Former Barcelona and Liverpool striker, Luis Suarez could soon retire from football after it was revealed that the striker is in ‘constant pain’ amid his battle with injuries.

The Uruguayan striker currently plays in Brazil with Serie A side Gremio since leaving his boyhood club, Nacional, at the end of December last year.

He’s made 25 appearances in all competitions for the side but is currently battling injury problems.

Having missed six games through injury thus far, it’s now been revealed by the club president that Suarez is in ‘constant pain’ and could be on the verge of retirement.

In a video that appeared on Twitter, the club president Alberto Guerra said: ‘Luis Suárez is reaching his limit.

‘To be able to play he is given almost daily injections and special treatments, he feels constant pain. The thing is serious’.

Suarez has had long-running problems with his knee and was sidelined for 149 days after undergoing surgery during his time at Barcelona.

The 36-year-old, despite his injury problems, has still managed to score 11 goals and record eight assists during his outings for the Brazilian side.

He also helped the club claim the Campeonato Gaúcho 2023 title after a 2-1 aggregate victory over Caxias RS, where Suarez scored one of his team’s goals.

Prior to joining Gremio at the start of the year, Suarez had been playing for boyhood club Nacional in the Uruguayan Primera División.

During his six-month stint at the club, he managed to score eight goals in 16 games and helped them clinch a league title.

Suarez called an end to his time in Europe after leaving Atletico Madrid in 2022. He’d spent two years in Madrid and was part of the side that won La Liga in 2020-21.

Prior to that, he’d spent six years at Barcelona and four years at Liverpool – where he scored 280 goals in 416 games combined.
