[News] How they raised between $10,0000 and $1 million for their businesses (creative strategies

This year, Smallstarter Africa is celebrating its members who successfully raised up to $1 million (or more) for their businesses.

Anne Rweyora (top left), recently closed a $660,000 funding round for her real-estate business, Smart Havens Africa. Her innovative approach to low-cost housing attracted several grants, prize awards, and equity deals from investors. She also got featured on CNN, the BBC, and other international media, and was a top finalist for the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, a prestigious competition organised by the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering.

Musa Darboe (bottom left) fought through difficult odds to raise money for his business after relocating from the USA to start one of West Africa’s fastest-growing integrated rice farms, Maruo Farms. To date, he has raised over $1 million to grow and expand his business through a combination of major grants, public-private partnerships, technical assistance, and international development funds.

We also celebrate other members in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Namibia who have raised $10,000 and above, including our member from Nigeria (Olusegun Owoade, co-founder of Mecho Autotech) who qualified for this year’s prestigious Y Combinator cohort in San Fransisco, California, USA.

Across Africa, many smart people are stuck with their brilliant business ideas, and several businesses are shutting down because their owners can’t access the funds they need to grow, expand or turn around their business.

Smallstarter Africa has worked with entrepreneurs like Anne, Musa, and several others to understand the secrets and creative strategies of raising money for any kind of business, especially in Africa’s tight economic environment.

Do you have an innovative business idea or a struggling startup that needs funding to survive?

Or do you own an existing business that is performing below its potential and needs additional capital to grow and expand?

During this tour, we noticed that bright business ideas, amazing products, and a die-hard entrepreneurship spirit are very much in abundance across Nigeria. But, unfortunately, what many entrepreneurs often lack is “fundraising skills” — the ability to raise enough funds to take their businesses to the next level of success.

That’s why we are looking for entrepreneurs and business owners who are willing to invest the time and effort to learn this important and strategic skill, so they too can raise the funds they need to start, grow, expand, or turn around their business.
