[News] Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni tells mothers to return to the office; says if she can run the country with a seven-year-old daughter, so can they

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has told mothers in Italy to return to the office, saying that if she can run the country with a seven-year-old daughter, so can they.

Meloni, who recently returned to work after recovering from a vertigo-inducing ear infection urges mothers to combine motherhood with working.

Meloni said if she and other world leaders including Ursula Von Der Leyen can have a career and children, mothers in Italy can too.

Asked about her party’s promotion of motherhood and the traditional family, Meloni told a three-hour press conference: ‘If I were asked to choose between the role of prime minister and my daughter, Ginevra, I would have no doubts, like any other mother, because motherhood gives something that nothing else can give.’

But Meloni, who separated from her partner last year after he was recorded asking a colleague for a threesome, said she doesn’t believe that motherhood can or should stop women from holding down a job or pursuing a political career.

She said: ‘Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, has seven children. Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, has four children. You can do it.’
