[News] Mob sets man accused of stealing motorcycle ablaze in Benue



Angry residents have set a man ablaze after accusing him of stealing a motorcycle in Otukpo, Benue State.
It was gathered that the incident happened at the prominent Otukpo main roundabout on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
The suspect was from Odejo in Agatu Local Government Area of the state.
According to an eyewitness, Sunday Abah, the suspect had allegedly stolen the motorcycle from its owner outside Otukpo main market but was later caught when the bike ran out of fuel.
The mob subjected the suspect to a severe beating before setting him on fire.
“A young man was cremated and incinerated for stealing a bike yesterday in Otukpo. The thief was said to have stolen the bike outside Otukpo main market when he carefully observed that the owner packed it and went to the market,” Mr. Abah narrated on Wednesday.
“The owner returned a few minutes only to discover his bike was stolen, and he quickly alerted the original owner of the bike. The man went and mounted road at Adoka road where they normally cross to Agatu to sell their booties.
“It was at this juncture, he saw the thief pushing the bike when he exhausted the fuel in the tank, he was looking for black market, then the owner caught him, and led him straight to a crematorium at Otukpo/Enugu round about, where he was given a jungle justice.
“In as much as it’s illegal to take someone’s life, it’s also bad and pitiable to steal something some body suffer to buy. Most of these bikes are bought on hire purchase about 700 to 800k, and you want to steal it cheaply so the man who labored under the sun can go to hell? The thief has seen the hell.”
