Therefore Ondo State Police Command has disclosed that officers rescued a couple from an angry mob who stoned their son, Tope Olorunfemi, to death in Akure.
The deceased, suspected to be an internet fraudster, was killed after his vehicle reportedly crushed some people to death and injured others along Ijoka road in Akure on Monday, April 10, 2023.
However, spokesperson for the command, Funmilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the development to journalists said only two people died in the accident while six others were injured. She said the parents of the deceased came for their son but were also attacked by the mob.
“No one can confirm if the young man in question was an internet fraudster, there was an accident that led to the death of a motorcyclist,” the PPRO stated.
“Rather than rendering help, some resolved to jungle justice by killing the young man, Olorunfemi Tope, who drove the vehicle and set his car ablaze,”
“But for the quick intervention of the police, his parents too would have been killed. In all, two people were confirmed dead, while six others involved and injured in the accident are currently in the hospital,”
“The parents of the driver (deceased) came to the scene where the boy was lynched to death.”
“When there is an accident, the right thing to do is to save lives and not sniff life out of anyone, before you join hands or partake in mob action, Remember Murder is a Felonious Act #Say no to Jungle Justice,” Odunlami added.
A source who spoke on the incident said the driver attempted to flee the scene after the accident occurred.
“The driver of the Toyota car, who did not sustain any injury, was trying to escape from the scene before he was caught by some youths and beaten into a coma. The mob did not spear the man’s life, as he was beaten and stoned to death, while his vehicle was also set ablaze by the angry mob.”
