[News] Nigerian thief jailed after escaping from police officers and dashing out their handcuff which was sold to metal scavengers



A thief who escaped from police custody and dashed handcuffs to his friend who then sold them to scavengers known as “Baban bola”, has been jailed by an Adamawa court.

 

The convict identified as Dalhatu Said, was first arrested after he was reported to the police for conniving with other criminals to steal three turkeys on the 22nd of September. He however jumped over the fence of the police outpost at Sangere on the outskirt of Yola where he had been detained and dashed the handcuff to his friend who sold the gears to metal scavengers.

Upon being rearrested and arraigned, Justice Ibrahim Musa Ulenda of Upper Area Court 4 convicted the suspect on charges of theft and escape from lawful custody.

 

Dalhatu was sentenced to one year term for escaping from lawful custody and another three years for theft with the option of N10,000 and N50,000 fine respectively. The judge also ordered the convict to pay a N7,000 compensation.
